Movie: Sunset Boulevard
Cynical yet piercingly honest, Billy Wilder’s classic Sunset Boulevard was among the first movies to peel back the pristine image of Hollywood to reveal the dark underbelly of fame, ego, ambition, and madness within the cutthroat system of the film industry. It is the story of a struggling screenwriter and the relationship he develops with a reclusive, forgotten silent film star, herself deeply delusional about her fame and relevance. Starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson, it is a landmark of both Hollywood drama and film noir; a piece that starkly comments on the homogeneity of genre, evolving tastes, and issues of age and stardom for women still deeply entrenched at the time it was made.
Showtime begins at 6:00 pm with a discussion afterwards at about 7:50.
