Join master storyteller Naomi Steinberg and discover her book "Goosefeather" through the Japanese art of kamishibai!
Artist and storyteller Naomi Steinberg is hitting the road to share her engaging and heartfelt debut book, Goosefeather, with audiences across the country. The tour, starting in Vancouver, includes the Toronto Fringe Festival, where she’s performing a children’s show inspired by the book. Developed and translated during a micro-residency offered by Le Conseil Culturel et Artistique de la CB, the show uses the art of kamishibai, a Japanese form of storytelling that uses a simple wooden frame with images inside, animated by the performer's voice. The skillful use of graphic imagery, voice and movement make kamishibai a popular form of street entertainment as well as a successful classroom show.
In Goosefeather, Steinberg takes readers on a big adventure, crossing 18 borders by land and sea while covering 55,965 kilometres. From the red clay of rural France where her grandfather saved her Jewish grandmother from the Nazis during World War II to the wild green of California and the winding rice fields of Japan, Steinberg weaves personal reflection with local stories that beautifully reveal how cultures make sense of the places that shape them.
Join Naomi at the library on July 29 at 10:30 am to experience her storytelling gifts and ask your questions about the story, the art of kamishibai, and Naomi herself.
This event is ideal for children of all ages and their adults but is open to anyone who would like to attend.
Naomi will also have copies of Goosefeather available for purchase.
Born on Canada's supernatural west coast, in the beautiful Coast Salish territories, of French and Jewish descent, Naomi Steinberg has brought traditional folk stories, fairy tales and community art projects to life in countries around the world since 2001. Visit her website to learn more.
