Movie: Black Orpheus
It is the time of the Rio Carnival, and Marcel Camus’ 1959 film Black Orpheus presents it in perhaps its most vibrant showcase. An interpretation of the myth of Orpheus set in in the favelas of 1950s Brazil, it follows the doomed love affair of Orfeu and Eurydice against the backdrop of the elaborate Carnival festivities. Gracefully artful and boldly energetic, and coloured by an exuberant soundtrack from a couple of the country’s top composers, it is a visual cultural feast. Stars Breno Mello and Marpessa Dawn.
Showtime begins at 6:00 pm with a discussion afterwards at about 7:50.
